Dolby Atmos is now being demonstrated in Hamm

With the new sound format Dolby Atmos, the sound in the home theater becomes completely three-dimensional. It goes without saying that we had to try it out, and our Atmos demonstration has been running in Hamm since yesterday. Our Dolby Atmos installation in the AUDITORIUM Hamm. Before we opted for the excellent AM-1 from Bowers & Wilkins. They are actually intended for outdoor use, but because of the simple installation they are ideal for use as ceiling speakers. We published a general introduction to Dolby Atmos some time ago , but now you can finally try it out. Here is a short first report from our Robin, who was given the honor of commissioning: After installing the loudspeakers (editor's note: from B&W), I put the Marantz SR 7009 into operation with Dolby Atmos. Installation was easy. The speakers on the ceiling are called Height 1 (top front) and Height 2 (top rear). The Marantz offers setting options for different mounting situations for the loudspeakers. Front Height (presence speaker at the front) and Height 2 share a space on the connection panel. It doesn't seem like you can use presence speakers with four ceiling speakers, so you have to make a decision. First plus point: the familiar Marantz setup menu. In the end, it really doesn't get any easier for the customer. When the setup is finished, you can - as usual - select different modes. To control the ceiling and / or presence speakers, you have to hold down the Movie or Music button and select the "DTS-HD + Dolby Surround" mode. In this example, the HD master audio signal is reproduced via the five to seven "normal" speakers; the remaining loudspeakers are included. Of course, only the signal that is actually present on the DVD / Blu-ray is reproduced via "Direct"; the ceiling then remains silent. A small H in the display shows that the ceiling speakers are active.

The small H in the display indicates when the "Height" speakers are active. In the first short listening it all sounded pretty convincing. The ceiling speakers play discreetly in the background. It actually all sounds a little rounder, more natural. The best thing to do is to listen to it yourself - from now on with us in Hamm. Robin Linnemann
